Awareness for UAE Families and Schools
While type 2 diabetes dominates headlines, type 1 diabetes an autoimmune condition unrelated to lifestyle affects thousands of children and adolescents across the UAE, and the IDF notes global type 1 rates continuing to rise. Because it strikes in childhood, often suddenly, awareness among parents, teachers, and school staff is critical.
Warning signs include unusual thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue in a child. Left unrecognized, type 1 diabetes can progress quickly to a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, which requires emergency care.
UAE schools are increasingly adopting diabetes management policies, but gaps remain. Parents of a newly diagnosed child should work with their school to ensure staff know how to recognize low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), permit insulin administration or supervised selfcare, and allow snacks/water access as needed.
For families:
• Learn the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes — treatment and daily management differ significantly.
• Connect with local support groups and endocrinology clinics in Dubai and Abu Dhabi for peer support.
• Ensure your child always carries fast-acting glucose (like glucose tablets or juice) for emergencies.
Action step: If your child shows any warning signs, seek paediatric medical evaluation promptly early diagnosis prevents dangerous complications.
