Dr Simone Speggiorin is a consultant paediatric and congenital cardiac surgeon with over 20 years of experience in leading centres in Italy, India and the UK. He currently works at the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, where he focuses on neonatal and infant cardiac surgery and complex congenital heart disease. He is particularly experienced in combined cardiac and airway procedures and in surgery for aortic arch anomalies and vascular rings.
After completing his medical degree and postgraduate training in Adult and Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at the University of Padua, he undertook advanced training in Paediatric Cardiothoracic and Tracheal surgery, as well as paediatric interventional radiology, at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London. In his clinical practice he performed around 2000 heart procedures independently. He develops the use of 3D and 4D cardiac and airway models to plan complex operations and has a strong involvement in neonatal and paediatric ECMO.
Dr Speggiorin has held leadership roles clinical lead in paediatric and congenital cardiac surgery and audit and quality improvement lead. He has contributed to the development of outcome dashboards and structured governance meetings and is widely published in the fields of congenital cardiac surgery and ECMO. He is an active member of several national and international societies and also provides expert medical witness reports in paediatric and congenital cardiac surgery.
