About Me

Dr. Abdul Rahman Hakeem joins Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), Abu Dhabi, as a Consultant Adult and Paediatric Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgeon, bringing extensive experience from leading high-volume liver transplant centres in the UK and internationally.

He has over eight years of consultant experience in liver transplantation and has previously worked at King’s College Hospital, London, the Rela Institute & Medical Centre in Chennai, and Leeds Teaching Hospitals. He is a fully independent adult and paediatric liver transplant surgeon with expertise in deceased and living donor liver transplantation, transplant oncology, machine perfusion and advanced hepatobiliary surgery, with a particular interest in minimally invasive and robotic surgery.

Dr Hakeem holds FRCS, FEBS and FACS qualifications and a PhD in Human Liver Bioengineering from the University of Leeds. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers and has an H-index of 32, with research interests spanning liver transplantation, living donor transplantation, transplant oncology, machine perfusion, liver bioengineering, portal flow modulation and paediatric transplantation.

Dr Hakeem has received several prestigious Young Investigator Awards, including the ILTS Young Investigator Award in 2022, the Liver Transplant Society of India (LTSICON) Young Investigator Award in 2019, and the European Society of Organ Transplantation (ESOT) Young Investigator Award in 2017. He was also recognised as a Young Investigator Award mentor at ILTS in 2025, reflecting his continued contribution to research, academic mentorship and the development of the next generation of transplant professionals. He has held several national and international leadership positions, including Chair of the ILTS Vanguard Committee, Chair of the UK Liver Transplant Collaborative and Co-Lead of the NHSBT Living Donor Liver Transplant Project Board.

At SKMC, he looks forward to contributing to the development of advanced adult and paediatric liver transplantation, living donor transplantation, hepatobiliary surgery, transplant oncology and innovative surgical services, while supporting education, research and multidisciplinary collaboration across the region.
