Dr Khushnood completed his medical degree in India (MBBS) and post-graduation in business management (MBA) from Cardiff University, UK in 2004. Having begun his NHS career in the UK in 2007, he was awarded Membership to the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health in 2010 (MRCPCH, UK). During 2011-2017, he trained in paediatric cardiology at several tertiary UK congenital cardiac centres including Great Ormond Street, Birmingham Children’s hospital and AlderHey Children’s hospital with a focus on cardiac transplantation, heart failure and cardiac MRI.
As expert transplant physician and lead for advanced heart failure & mechanical circulatory support, he maintains a strong collaboration with international heart failure and transplantation working groups and centres. He has also successfully developed regional heart failure services. He is Principal Investigator for national and international clinical trials, in keeping with his interest in academia and research. He was an Associate Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University and member of several professional societies. He is invited reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals.
With keen interest in information technology, Dr Khushnood facilitates linkage between patient-centred care and development of IT tools and data-driven solutions to improve delivery of care.
He also holds various leadership roles – National Clinical lead for National congenital heart disease audit, NICOR. He has been previously in roles of CHD Network Director, Patient Safety & Quality Improvement lead for cardiothoracic board and Clinical Governance Lead at Freeman Hospital and Educational lead for resident doctor training
