About Me

Dr. Einar Thor Hafberg, MD is a board-certified pediatric gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist. He earned his medical degree from the University of Iceland and completed his pediatric residency at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Hafberg pursued subspecialty training through fellowships in Pediatric Gastroenterology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Advanced Pediatric Transplant Hepatology at Lurie Children’s Hospital, Northwestern University.
Dr. Hafberg previously, he held faculty appointments at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and worked as an attending hepatologist in both the U.S. and Iceland. He has led the development Dr. Hafberg has co-authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications and contributed to multiple multicenter clinical trials focused on pediatric liver diseases and viral hepatitis. He has presented his research at international conferences, including NASPGHAN, SPLIT, and the Liver Meeting. His academic interests include pediatric liver disease, liver transplantation outcomes, metabolic liver disease, and biliary atresia.
Dr. Hafberg is an active member of professional societies such as the AGA, AASLD, and AST. He has also contributed to national and international policies as part of UNESCO commissions.
