A New Chapter in UAE Cardiac Care: SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) Performs First Venus P-Valve Implantation

A New Chapter in UAE Cardiac Care: SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) Performs First Venus P-Valve Implantation

In a landmark moment for the UAE’s medical landscape, SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), a subsidiary of PureHealth, the largest healthcare Group in the Middle East, has successfully performed the country’s first implantation of the Venus P-Valve system, a minimally invasive, life-changing procedure for patients with complex congenital heart conditions.  The Venus P Valve is placed by a keyhole method to replace the pulmonary valve.

Among the first to benefit from this breakthrough was Ameena AlHosani, a 30-year-old Emirati woman, mother to a 3-year-old child, and a dedicated professional at the Abu Dhabi Government Media Office (ADGMO). Born with a congenital heart condition, Ameena had severe narrowing of her lung artery.  This was operated on when she was 2 years of age.   Ameena had lived a normal, active life, until her condition worsened with a severe leak of her lung artery valve leading to her right ventricle becoming dilated.

For many patients, this diagnosis would have meant open-heart surgery or travel abroad as the required keyhole valve was not available in the UAE.  But thanks to the expertise at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, the team were able to obtain the Venus P valve and Ameena became one of the first in the UAE to receive the Venus P-Valve implant right here at home.

The procedure was performed without the need for open-heart surgery. Within just 48 hours, Ameena was discharged, returning to her child and her life with renewed strength and minimal recovery time.

“With deep gratitude and unwavering trust in the vision of the UAE government and the remarkable progress of Abu Dhabi’s healthcare system, I feel truly fortunate to have received the Venus P-Valve implant here at home, without the need for open-heart surgery. This experience is not just a personal milestone, but a powerful reflection of a nation’s dedication to the health and well-being of its people,” said the patient, Ameena AlHosani.

“This wasn’t just a medical procedure, it was a promise fulfilled.  When patients are referred to SKMC they become part of our family.  It is our duty to ensure they can receive the latest technology and world class care, right here at home,” said Dr. Rizwan Rehman, Consultant Paediatric and Interventional Cardiologist at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City.

This achievement was the result of a deeply collaborative effort. From Catheter and anesthesia teams to nursing and technical staff, every individual played a vital role in this success.

“Ameena’s journey is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. With the steadfast support of our leadership, SKMC is now able to offer world-class care for Adult Congenital Heart Disease—right here at home, where patients like Ameena can heal surrounded by their loved ones. Our mission goes beyond medicine; it’s about compassion, connection, and putting our patients at the centre of every decision we make,” said Dr. Rizwan AhmedConsultant Cardiologist at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City.

“It was a real pleasure to work alongside the team in the SKMC catheter lab during the PPVI procedure with the VenusP valve. I was deeply impressed by their depth of knowledge, technical skill, and infectious enthusiasm. Every team member was eager to learn, quick to support one another, and fully committed to delivering the best care. This was truly one of the most outstanding teams I’ve encountered in my international experience,” said Professor Sir Shakeel Qureshi, Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist.

This success is more than a medical milestone, it’s a message to every patient and family in the UAE: you are not alone, and you don’t have to go far to find hope.

PureHealth’s network is redefining patient care in the UAE and elevating the country’s healthcare sector to be one of the best in the world. The group has invested heavily in some of the best doctors and technology available to enable people across the Emirates to live longer, healthier, happier and fuller lives.
